Questions - Builders Surplus, Inc.
Asked at the gate, answered here
Six questions come up most weeks. They are written down plainly, including the ones where the answer is no. Open a question by pressing it; the same six are on the board by the office door.

Each one is answered the way it gets answered at the gate, including the answers that are no.
01Do you sell online?+
No. There is no ordering, holding, reserving or paying on this website, and there is no plan to add any. What is published here is the yard notes, the reuse guides, the trade glossary and the provenance records - information about the material, not a way to transact in it.
If you want something out of a bin, telephone (972) 385-2338 or write to [email protected], and the conversation happens the way it has always happened: at the gate, in person, with the material in front of everybody.
02How is a lot priced?+
Nothing on this site is priced, and no figure appears anywhere on it. A lot is worked out at the gate, looking at the actual material: how much of it there is, what condition it came off the truck in, how much of the run is usable, and what work the yard has already put into it.
Two pallets of the same brick from two different buildings are not the same lot, and a note on a screen cannot carry that difference. Ask at the gate and you get an answer the same day, with the material in your hand.
03Do you deliver?+
The yard has no fleet and runs no delivery service of its own. Most material leaves here on the back of whoever collected it, which is why the telephone call before a trip matters: you will know whether the load needs a truck, a trailer, or a car with the seats down.
Where a contractor already has haulage moving through Dallas-Fort Worth, we are glad to have a lot ready and banded for their driver to collect during the published hours. That arrangement is made between the yard and the contractor, by telephone or by email, never through this website.
04Can I bring material in?+
Often, yes, but call first and describe it. The yard takes in surplus building material - doors, flooring, sash and glass, brick, beams and joists, plumbing fixtures, paint and finish - when it is clean, sorted enough to handle, and worth putting in a bin.
What the yard will not take: material still fixed to a building, because we do no demolition work; anything wet or mouldy; and anything that has been in a fire or a flood without being dried and checked. If we say no on the telephone, you have saved the drive.
When material does come in, we ask where it was and which part of the building it came out of, so the provenance note in the ledger is honest rather than vague.
05Is old glass safe to re-glaze?+
Old glass is usually flat, usually clear, and often worth putting back in the sash it came out of. It is also old: it carries surface stress, edge damage you cannot always see, and a history of being flexed in a frame that moved. It can break on its own schedule, sometimes long after the job is finished.
The yard will tell you honestly whether a pane is worth glazing again, and the sash guide explains how to handle it - thick gloves, edges first, no prying against the glass. What the yard will not do is guarantee it. No one can, and a promise otherwise is only a promise.
Where a pane has to sit above a door, over a walkway or in a school, talk to your glazier about the safety requirements that apply to that opening before you reuse anything.
06Do you certify anything?+
No certifications of any kind: not for species, not for grade, not for age, not for environmental claims, and not for structural use. The yard is not a testing laboratory and does not pretend to be one.
What we do keep is a provenance note for each lot - where it came from and what was true of it as far as we could tell. Where the paperwork ran out, the note says plainly that it is a guess, and it is labelled as a guess on the tag and in the ledger. That is the whole of the claim.
If your project needs a stamped evaluation - a beam carrying load, glass in a hazardous location, anything an inspector will sign off - get it from a licensed professional. Salvage material can be excellent; excellent is not the same as certified.

Ask the yard directly
Carol Devereaux answers the telephone and the email during the published hours. A short question gets a short answer, usually the same day.
